new small- and medium-sized wineries in non-traditional\, cold-climate win
e regions. These rural entrepreneurs include grape growers that have decid
ed to vertically integrate into winemaking and also non-farmer investor-en
trepreneurs who have opted for an alternative lifestyle. As a result of th
is entrepreneurial activity\, wine clusters are emerging in non-traditiona
l regions such as in the states of Michigan\, Missouri and Northern New Yo
rk. These wine clusters might become economic vectors of rural development
as they have the potential to foster the development of related industrie
s (e.g.\, tourism) as is the case of established wine regions such as Napa
Valley.   This research seminar examines the barriers that wineries and
emerging wine regions must overcome to be successful vectors of rural deve
lopment.  In particular\, we will present the results of an exploratory s
urvey of Michigan\, Missouri\, and New York wineries.  These results reve
al the key challenges facing rural entrepreneurs in these regions with emp
hasis on economic\, business and marketing issues at two interrelated leve
ls ? the firm (i.e.\, the winery) and the industry (or region). Furthermor
e\, we conduct a comparative analysis of these challenges across the three
regions and highlight several significant similarities and differences.
The seminar concludes by introducing a conceptual framework for addressin
g the two most significant challenges: grape procurement and wine distribu
tion.     Registration:  There is no fee for attending this webinar.\nI
