Mountain View Farm Spring Class Series - Earthen Oven Workshop (12:30 - noon - 5:00 pm)

Two-part series of hands-on workshops where you'll learn to build an earthen bread and pizza oven.  We will spend most of the time constructing the ovens but there will also be time for discussion of understanding, designing and using the oven.  Be prepared to get dirty!

MDA To Host Screening Of Documentary "The Maryland Harvest" To Air On MPT (11:30 am - 12:30 - noon)

The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) will host a screening of  the upcoming documentary “The Maryland Harvest”. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with some of those featured in the piece.

The Maryland Harvest is scheduled to air on MPT on April 17 at 9 p.m., during Chesapeake Bay Week. The screening at MDA will show about 20 minutes of the hour-long broadcast. Media representatives are invited to attend.

Aquaculture Workshop For Southern Maryland (9:00 am - 2:30 pm)

Tractor Operation And Maintenance (All Day)
This two-day, hands-on workshop demystifies tractors and empowers their users to operate and maintain their machines more safely, and with greater skill and confidence. Day one focuses on the fundamentals of tractor operation; reviewing everything from the historical purpose and use of tractors to the functions and safe use of all of the pedals and levers, the drawbar, power take-off (PTO), and the front-end loader. We will end the first day with tractor driving practice for the novices in the class. The second day is a hands-on lesson in do-it-yourself tractor maintenance, performing a variety of routine tractor maintenance chores including oil and filter change, coolant change, hydraulic-transmission fluid and filter change, air filter replacement, fuel filter replacement, belt tension adjustment, battery care, and a range of other do-it-yourself tasks that are typically performed at regularly scheduled intervals. Workshop materials including a tractor user’s resource list will be provided.

Cover Crops For Early Spring Vegetables And Measuring Nutrients In The Field (5:30 pm - 7:30 pm)
Dr. Ray Weil and Natalie Lounsbury of the University of Maryland will give a tour of their experimental plots using forage radish, spring oats and other winterkilled cover crops for early spring vegetable planting without herbicides. The experiment includes tilled and no-till treatments and a variety of early spring vegetables. There will be equipment demos of modified push seeders for no-till planting and Dr. Weil will demonstrate how to take soil samples for nutrient analysis and new field techniques for measuring nitrate, potassium and pH in the field. Use of the pre-sidedress nitrate test for vegetable.

Poultry Processing And Marketing Group Organization Meeting (7:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

Got poultry? Need them processed? Looking to rein in production costs through group purchases and services? Could you use an additional volume market for your sustainable raised poultry? Then you need to attend an information and organizational meeting of a new group forming in Central Maryland whose mission is to:

  • Provide safe, environmentally responsible, and economically feasible processing services to small and mid-sized poultry producers.
  • Organize a buying group for chicks, poults, feeds, and poultry supplies to secure quantity discounts.
  • Provide training and continuing education about regulations, marketing, and production.
  • Service volume sales accounts through aggregation of group member birds to provide an additional outlet to group members and sufficient supplies to volume buyers.

Who Wants To Be An Urban Farmer? (8:30 am - 12:30 - noon)

 

The second “Who Wants to be an Urban Farmer” is a morning of workshops that provide the opportunity to learn specific production techniques utilized at urban farms in Baltimore, Maryland. Each workshop will present a different specialized tool to growing food for production in Baltimore City. The workshops will be focused on urban farming and production, and presented in a scope and scale able to be transferred to backyards and open urban green space. The best recipients of the workshops will be new urban farmers, and home and community gardeners looking to improve their operations with efficiency, diversification, and output. Suggested donation is a sliding scale of $5-15. Donations will be accepted online through Eventbrite or at the workshops.

Mountain View Farm Spring Class Series - Goat Milk Soap Making (1:00 pm - 4:30 pm)

Come and learn about handcrafted goat milk soap.  We will be gathering to explore the process of making soap with lye.  We will be using organic oils, goat milk, beeswax, herbs, essential oils and lye to create artisan hand crafted soap.  We will provide molds to take home and each participant will be taking home a pound of soap.
